Influence of Si content on microstructure and properties of 6063 aluminum alloy

The effect of Si content on microstructure and property of 6063 aluminum alloy was studied,and the mechanism of surplus Si in influencing the microstructure and property of the alloy was discussed.The results indicate that proper surplus Si can refine the casting microstructure of 6063 alloy,and thus its comprehensive mechanical properties are improved.No significant effect of Si content on corrosion resistance is observed for 6063 alloy with surplus Si less than 0.06 percent,but excessive surplus Si can cause corrosion resistance of the alloy decreasing significantly.With the increase of surplus Si,conductivity of the alloy decreases.It suggested that Mg and Si mass ratio should be slightly less than normal value of 1.73 in 6063 alloy for higher conductivity.
