Effects of Sm on microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ61 alloys

Microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ61 magnesium alloy with Sm(0~2.0wt%) addition were investigated by meansof OM,SEM and XRD.The results show that the addition of Sm can dramatically enhance yield strength and tensile strength of the aged alloy at 20 ℃~175 ℃.Added 0.5wt%~2.0wt% Sm,the microstructure of the aged AZ61 alloy is remarkably refined,and the dispersed high-melting point phase Al_2Sm is found in the alloy.The microstructure and mechanical properties of the AZ61 alloy with 1.5wt% Sm are optimal.
