Influence of sampling dimension on residual stresses of aluminum alloy thick plate

It is a common method to use specimen with certain size cut from quenched aluminum alloy thick plate to measure residual stresses of original aluminum alloy thick plate by layer removal method,crack compliance method,X-ray diffraction method and neutron diffraction method.Finite element analysis and related experiments were conducted to study influence of sampled specimens with different size on measurement result of residual stresses.The results show that size of specimen has significant influence on the measurement result of residual stresses of aluminum alloy thick plate.When length and width of the specimen is less than twice characteristic distance,which is equal to the thickness of the thick plate,the specimen is not be able to present the real residual stresses of original aluminum alloy thick plate and the measurement result is severely distorted.Based on present study,the specimens with length and width larger than twice characteristic distance are recommended in the measurement of residual stresses of aluminium alloy thick plate in order to obtain a reliable result.
