Preparation and wear resistance of a new dense Fe-based amorphous coating

A new Fe40Cu8Cr15Mo14C15B6Y2 amorphous coating on AISI 1045 low carbon steel substrate was fabricated by Activated Combustion High-Velocity Air-Fuel Spraying( AC-HAVF). The microscopic structure and friction / wear behavior of the Fe-based amorphous coatings were investigated by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and friction / wear testing machine. The results indicate that the Fe40Cu8Cr15Mo14C15B6Y2 coating of 400 μm in thickness shows nearly fully amorphous and high dense microstructure with the porosity of less than 1. 2%,and the good binding between coating and substrate is observed. Moreover,the Fe-based amorphous coating exhibits high hardness of 1038 HV and lower wear mass loss that is about 1 /4 of the AISI 1045 substrate. Delamination wear tends to occur for the amorphous coating under dry sliding conditions. Meanwhile,the local contact area of the friction interface produces a flash high temperature,and the oxide film forms on the coating surface. With the continued oxidation progress during sliding,when the oxide film grows to a critical thickness,it will eventually burst due to its brittleness to form oxide debris,further accelerating wear mass loss of the coating.
