SENSITIVITY OF SUMMER CORN (ZEA MAYS) PLANT WITH VARIOUS LEAF NUMBERS TO SOIL SUBMERGENCE

Corn plants with different leaf numbers (4,6,8 and 11) were submerged simultaneously for 5 days in the f1eld lysimeter.It was found that grain yield was reduced markedly in all plants compared with their controls, and the maximum decrease occurred in the plants with 4 leaves. The effect of waterlogging on yield was gradually mitigated with increase in plant ages. The reapid senescence of lower leaves was induced by submergence treatment and the malondialdehyde (MDA) content in leaves increased sharply with the degradation of chlorophyll. Nitrogen defficency, growth inhibition and a large quantity of soluble carbohydrates acumulation were observed in young leaves. The effect of submergence on the physiological parameters mentioned above was much more severe in the plants with 4 leaves. The emergence of secondary roots from stem nodes and the enlargement of root porosity were stimulated by soil submergence. The ratio of the secondary root number to the total root number went up with plant age and a highly significant negatvie correlation was found between this ratio and the decrease rate in yield under submergence conditions (r = 0.96 and 0.95 at the end of waterlogging and the 7th day after draining, respectively). This indicates that the difference in the potential of secondary root emergence might reflect the difference in adaptation to waterlogging for corn plants with various leaf numbers, and may explain why the 4-leaf stage of the corn plant is the sensitive stage to waterlogging. Thus, it is important for the corn plant to enter the 8-leaf stage before the rainy season in order to escape waterlogging in the sensitive stage. This could be achieved by earlier planting and improved plant growth.
