Study on Combining Ability for Some Economic Characters in Hybrid Rice (Oryza sativa L. ssp. sinica)

The combining ability for 8 characters in hybrid rice (O. sativa L. ssp sinica, or japonica ) was studied in a 7×5 diallel system. Most of the traits of F1 hybrids were affected by both GCA effects of A and R lines and SCA effects of their combinations. The panicle number per plant, however, was mainly affected by GCA effects of A lines, and the grain yield per plant was unaffected by GCA effects of R lines. GCA effects of A and R lines played a more important role as compared with SCA effects. As for GCA effects, A lines were more important than R lines. It was considered that greater attention should be devoted to the development of A lines, and the high yield potential of R lines and diversity of restorer sources should also be considered in the breed ing of hybrids with strong heterosis. The results also indicated that there was a very close and consistent positive relationship between heterosis and com bining ability, implying that the heterosis of a hybrid combination could be pre dicted trustworthyly by combining ability.
