Breeding Efficiency on Appearance Quality of Rice Grains(Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica)

In order to improve the appearance quality of japonica rice grains,filial populations developed from hybrids crossed between japonica rice varieties from Jiangsu province,China,and Japan with good quality were used for investigating breeding efficiency on appearance quality like percentage of grains with chalkiness(PGWC),degree of endosperm chalkiness(DEC) and grain endosperm transparency(GET).The results showed that it was effective to select lines according to appearance characters of PGWC,DEC and GET in F4-F6.There existed good relationship between generations in appearance characters.When the plants showed the first class of National Standard for High Quality on appearance quality in F4 and F5,70% of the plants in the next generation would also meet the first-class standard.Possibilities of plants with good appearance quality segregated from hybrid filial populations were quite different among combinations.
