Carbon Transformation and Balance of 14Clabelled Straw in Submerged Soils

Transformation and balance between 14C and 12C in ultisol and vertisol were examined by closed incubation and tracer techniquesThe mixture of soil and 14Clabelled rice or maize straw was incubated under submerged condition up to 112 days at 30℃The decomposition of straw C and native soil organic C was fast during the initial days,especially within the first 3~7 days of submerging,and then slowed gradually.At the 112th day,5420%~5540% of straw C evoled into 14CO2 with their decay rate constants ranging from 669×103d-1 to 706×10-3d-1,and their half life periods from 98 to 104 days.Transformation of native soil organic C showed that the amount of 12CO2 evolved from vertisol was always more than that in ultisol during the incubation time.Negtive and positive priming effects existed weakly in the soils amended with straws,and the priming rates were less than 5%,but net accumulation of straw carbon was found in all these treatments.At the 112th day of submerging only 676%~833% of native soil organic 12C was decomposed,and their decay rate constants changed between 588×10-4d-1 and 737×10-4d-1,and their half life periods between 258 and 323 years.
