STATISTICAL METHOD FOR GENETIC ANALYSIS OF SEED TRAITS IN DIALLEL CROSS DESIGNS

A new method was proposed for genetic analysis of seed traits in cereal crops, which may be applied to p 2 and p(p+1) /2 diallel data and p+q+2pq and p+q+pq incomplete diallel data. The genetic control of the seed trait under consideration, (i.e., subject to the maternity or endosperm/embryo genotypes), as well as additive variance σ 2 d , dominant variance σ 2 h , error variance σ 2 e , average additive effect and average dominance effect can be tested and estimated statistically for all of the above diallels. And the cytoplasmic effect c , variance σ 2 c and the background difference between two groups of pure parents , , can yet be added for p 2 and p+q+2pq diallels, and p+q+2pq and p+q+pq diallels, respectively. A worked example about gum content in barley seeds was given for demonstration.
