Effects of precipitation morphology of β-Mg_(17)Al_(12) phase on mechanical properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy

Different morphologies of β-Mg17Al12 phase such as net-shape,lameller-shape,spherical and rhomb-shape were obtained by solution,aging,annealing and spheroidizing.Effects of the morphologies of β-Mg17Al12 phase during the heat treatments on mechanical properties of as-cast AZ91 magnesium alloy were studied by OM,SEM,XRD,EDS,TEM as well as tensile and hardness tests.The results show that the net-shaped β-Mg17Al12 phase in AZ91 magnesium alloy can decrease the mechanical properties the lameller-shaped β-Mg17Al12 phase and spherical β-Mg17Al12 phase improve the ductility,and the rhomb-shaped β-Mg17Al12 phase can increase the strength of the alloy.
