INVESTIGATION ON MECHANICAL ALLOYING OF NiAl(Cr)

Five kinds of mixed elemelltal powders Niso-Ai5o-.Al50-x-Crx (x=5, 10, 15, 20, 25) have been mechanically alloyed in a high-energy ball mill. The effect of the alloying element Cr on both mechanical alloying process and the final products of Ni-rich NiAI intermetallics was systematically investigated by the methods of XRD, TEM, SEM and DTA. The results show that MA process can enhance solid solubility of Cr element in β-NiAI greatly. Adding 10% Cr or higher changes the reaction mechanism from explosive to ioterdiffusional. Adding 20% Cr or more results in the formation of the totally disorder NiAI(Cr) compound after 20 h milling. The end products β-NiAI(Cr)) of three kind of powders Ni50-Al5o-Al50-x-Cr.(x=5, 10, 15) are stable below 1000 ℃, but the end products of Ni50Al30-Cr20, Ni50-Al25-Cr25 milled powders decompose into β-NiAI(Cr),γ'-Ni3,(AI, Cr) and α-Cr at the high temperature.
