Depressive Symptoms and the Relationship with Cognitive Function for Elderly Patients in General Hospital

Objectives: To analyze depressive symptoms and the relationship with their cognitive function on elderly patients in general hospital. Method: 315 elderly patients aged more than 60 years old were selected from Tong Ji Hospital and were screened by a Chinese version of Center of Epidemiological Survey-Depression scale (CES-D) and a Chinese version of Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). Results: ①70 cases(22. 2%)have definite depressive symptoms, 53 cases (16. 8%)may have questionable depressive symptoms. ②Total scores of CES-D was correlated positively with sex(r = 0. 114,p0. 05), but negatively with education(r= -0. 153,p0. 01). ③The depressive symptoms have definite relationship with their cognitive function on elderly patients in general hospital. Conclusion: Routine screening for depressive symptoms and cognitive function is necessary for elderly patients in general hospital.
