THE ANTI-AGING AND IMMUNOMODULATING EFFECTS OF CHINESE HERBAL DRUGS EPIMEDIUM(YINYANGHUO)AND POLYGONUM(HESHOUWU)

This article is a brief review of some of the research work done during the last decade on the anti-aging and immunomodulating effects of two Chinese herbal extracts.From Epi- medium koreanum were extracted three active products,EPS,EPF and icariin.From Poly- gonum multiflorum was extracted a partially purified product PM-2.All of these active constituents were demonstrated in mice and rats to possess remarkable anti-aging effects and immunomodulating activities in T cells,B cells and macrophages.In addition,PM-2 was shown to stimulate the progenitors of both erythropoietic and granulo-macrophage cell systems in the mice bone marrow.The anti-aging effects were shown in naturally aging mice as well as in presenile aging mice models,the thymectomized model and D-galactose model.These results offer conclusive experimental support for the use of these herbs in Chinese longevity recipes.
