Fatigue Life Evaluation of Wheel in Service Using Industrial Computed Tomography

Bending test was the most important performance test of the wheel.At present,the fatigue life prediction was only applied to design model of the wheel and not the wheel in service,because the effect of abrasion,distortion and damage for wheel had not been considered in present.Firstly,the wheel was scanned to get a sequence of industrial Computed Tompography(CT) images.After the CT images were processed by Gaussian filter,the 3-D surface model was reconstructed from the CT images by using Marching Cubes(MC) algorithm,and then simplified and smoothed by Vertex Removing(VR) algorithm and Laplacian algorithm respectively.Then the 3-D surface model was processed by the software UG.Finally,based on finite element method,the stress distribution of the wheel was acquired by simulating its work condition and building up a boundary condition.Besides,the fatigue life of the wheel was predicted with nominal stress approach.The results show that the 3-D CAD model of the wheel can be rebuilt quickly and accurately according to its industrial CT data.The dangerous parts of the wheel can be located and the fatigue life prediction of the wheel is realized.
