Analysis on Adverse Weather on Traffic Signal Timing

HU Ming-wei (Department of Transportation Engineering,College of Civil Engineering,Shenzhen University,Shenzhen 518060,China)
Weather condition is one of the important factors affecting road transportation systems. A theoretical analysis is made to investigate the impact of adverse weather on signal timing, and then the optimization and microscopic traffic simulation are made on the signalized intersection′s signal timing under normal and adverse weather using the software of SYNCHRO and SIMTRAFFIC. This study indicates that adverse weather has obvious negative impacts on the result of signal timing. The specific optimized timing for adverse weather will improve the system performance with the benefits of delay reduction and speed increasing, but the improvement degree is stiu depended on many factors.
