General Education in Colleges and Universities in Present-day Taiwan:Some Observations of the Recent Evaluations and Accreditations

This article discusses the two large-scale evaluations and an accreditation report of general education conducted in Taiwan in recent years. It introduces the current situation of general education in colleges and universities in Taiwan. It also reviews three different models of general education as implemented in Taiwan with some examples, including common and general curriculum equilibrium elective model, general education equilibrium elective model, and core curriculum model. According to the accreditation report and results conducted in 26 schools, the paper presents both the strength and weakness of general education in these schools. The author suggests that the “core curriculum” model should be the most suitable one for Taiwan's general education in the future.
