Preparation of Cationic Starch with High Degree Substitution Using the Dry Process

The cationic starch with high degree of substitution bearing quaternary ammonium groups was prepared via reaction of starch with glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (GTA) using the dry process.The effects of reaction temperature,reaction time and amount of NaOH on the degrees of substitution of products were discussed by orthogonal test. When the amounts of starch and GTA were 5 5 g and 3 g respectively,the optimal reaction conditions were:NaOH 0 08 g,reaction time 2 5 h and reaction temperature 80 ℃,the degree of substitution was 0 56 and the reaction efficiency was 83 8%.
