Dynamic Research on Saponification of High Carbon Alkylphenol

The engineering research on saponification of high carbon alkylphenol with NaOH solution was done by dynamic method in intermittently stirred 200 L tank. To study the relationship between the conversion of alkylphenol and the characteristic variable and to optimize the reaction, the water amount was continually detected with online water analyzer, the material composition was analyzed with IR, and the conversion of alkylphenol was calculated. The result showed that, saponification started when w (H2O)was about 2% and the reaction did not progress when w(H2O) was below 0.06%. The relationship between conversion rate of alkylphenol and water amount in the system was established, and the influence of dehydration speed on conversion rate of alkylphenol was found. The coversion ratie of alkylphenol could exceed 95% when dehydration speed (-dw/dt) remained 5 000×10-6h-1 ,but it could only be about 75% when dehydration speed was higher than 10 000×10-6h -1. The higher the dehydration speed,the lower the conversion rate of alkylphenol. The result also showed that the speed control step of this reaction is diffusion. Na+ can react with alkylphenol to form sodium alkylphenolate only when NaOH remains in solution. If dehydration speed was too fast,NaOH would separate out as crystal and could no more participate in the reaction.
