Synthesis and Characterization of Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Grafted Thermosensitive Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) Hydrogel by RAFT Polymerization

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM) were grafted onto hydroxypropyl cellulose(HPC) by HPC multi chain transfer agent via the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) polymerization to synthesize the thermosensitive hydrogel(HPC-g-PNIPAM hydrogel).The influences of HPC molecular weight,and the density of RAFT molecule on the HPC chain and the component ratio of HPC over NIPAM,on the properties of hydrogels were investigated.It was found that the HPC-g-PNIPAM hydrogels showed the improved swelling and deswelling properties.The RAFT polymerization and the small amount of HPC-CTA component would slightly reduce the LCST,while the LCST would increase slightly when the amount of HPC-CTA rise to some extent.HPC also enhanced the mechanical properties of the hydrogels.
