Antarctic oscillation: concept and applications

GONG Daoyi and WANG Shaowu Department of Geophysics, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China  
Based on the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data set, empirical orthogonal function analysis and correlation analysis have been carried out. Antarctic oscillation index (AOI) is defined as the difference between the zonal-mean monthly sea level pressure departures of 40°S and 65°S. Regional surface temperature and precipitation over the extratropical Southern Hemisphere have a close relationship with AOI.
