Objective To observe the effect and security of diltiazem on elderly hypertension during surgical operation. Methods Twenty senile patients with primary hypertension were intravenously injected 10 mg of diltiazem during operation.Blood pressure, heart rate(HR) and electrocardiogram were monitored and side effects were recorded respectively at 1-,3-,5-,10-,30-and 60-min after injection. Results Blood pressure were decreased steadily.Systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and RPP were significantly decreased when compared with that of pre-injection(P0.05).HR were not significantly changed, and severe side effects were not found.ST-segment was improved to some extent in 65% of the patients when compared with that of pre-operation.Conclusion Diltiazem, which ameliorates myocardial ischemia significantly, can decrease the blood pressure of those with elderly hypertension down to a proper level with a secure and rapid effect during surgical operation.
