The Characteristics of Shanxi Catholics' Belief since Forbidding Period

LIU An-rong(Fudan University,Shanghai 200433,China)
When Catholicism was spread into Shanxi,it combined itself with dominant culture. Its inculturing trend was toward Confucianism.Since Catholicism was forbidden,Shanxi Catholics assimilated the ideas, ways of Folk Religion into Catholicism,so made it develop to ward Folk Religion. They celebrated the Catholic festivals by squibbing firecrackers, putting up couplets, bending the knees before Fathers. When they celebrated Chinese traditional festivals, they didn't completely give up traditional customs.Even foreign missionaries celebrated Chinese traditional festivals in Chinese traditional way.Shanxi Catholics' wedding and funeral ceremonies inherited most part of Shanxi traditional ceremonies. These showed the ceremonies reflecting their belief have been incultured in some way.
