Behavior of high strength steel columns under axial compression

The application of high strength steel in some practical engineering projects are introduced in this paper.Based on the experimental research about the buckling behavior of high strength steel welded section columns under axial compression,the residual stress distributions for high strength steel welded box sections and I-sections are presented,along with calculation,analysis,discussion and comparison of the experimental results.The overall and local buckling behavior of high strength steel welded section centrally loaded columns were investigated.The results indicate that,the overall buckling resistance reduction factor of high strength steel welded box section and I-section(about weak axis,flame-cut flange) centrally loaded columns fabricated from steel plate with thickness less than 40mm is higher than that of the same columns fabricated from ordinary steel,and the flange local buckling behavior of these two sections are not improved.It can be concluded that for the above two sections studied the buckling curve b can be selected and the flange slenderness limits can adopt the provisions in the current Chinese steel structures design code.
