Design of Anchor Bolts in Steel Column Bases

The design methods of steel column bases used in various countries are reviewed. Load-carrying capacity of a single anchor bolt and failure modes are summarized. It is revealed that, in contrary to the current method used in China which does not allowed anchor bolts to resist shear, bolts are allowed to resist only shear force in Europe, and the design stress of anchor bolts is also too conservative in China. A new criterion for anchor bolt is suggested in this paper which represents a compromise between various methods. Various procedures to determine the tensile forces of anchor bolts in steel column bases used in various countries are summarized. Brief evaluation of each procedure is given based on the upper and lower bound theorems in theory of plasticity. A new simple method is recommended for design use.
