RESULTS OF THE ZOOLOGICO-BOTANICAL EXPEDITION TO SOUTHWEST CHINA, 1955--1957 (PLECOPTERA)

CHENFU F. WU
The Stone-flies herewith described were collected by the entomologists of AcademiaSinica during their expeditions to Szechuan in the year 1955 and to Yunnan in 1955-1957. The collection contains 26 species distributed in 13 genera, of which one genusand 18 species are described as new to this country. All specimens, including holotypes and allotypes of new species, are kept in the In-stitute of Zoology of Academia Sinica. Specimens not collected during the expeditionsare indicated by asterisks. MATERIAL AND METHODS Since the great majority of type specimens formerly kept in various collections inChina was unfortunately destroyed during the war years, the known. species herein dealtwith have been redescribed from the Neotypes. All the descriptions are based on specimens which were removed from the pins andsoaked in hot water to allow complete relaxation and expansion. In certain cases it wasnecessary to remove the abdomen and boil it in 5% potassium hydroxide because theonly dependable characters for specific determination are the male genitalia. The bodylength is the measurement from the anterior margin of the head to the posterior tip ofthe wings when folded at repose, not including the antennae and cerci. Brinck (1954 Opusc. Ent., 19 (2--3): 190--201) stated his opinions that in Stone-flies there is a great deal of instability in wing veins among the individuals of the samegenus or species and sometimes even between the right and left sides of the same speci-men. There is also a great deal of variation in the lengths of the body and wings aswell as the coloration of the body mainly due to the different age and sclerotization ofthe specimens, to the degree of shrinkage and fading in dessication and to the effect ofsoaking in hot water, preserving in alcohol or boiling in potassium hydroxide. Further-more since the female genitalia are very instable and unreliable it is deemed unwise todescribe new species solely on the basis of female specimens. The writer fully agrees with him in these respects and takes this opportunity to ap-peal to all workers on Stone-flies not to pin the individual specimens separately but topreserve all the specimens collected from the same locality and on the same date directlyin 70% alcohol in the same bottle. This helps to associate the males and females of thesame species from the same locality and it saves all the trouble in removing the specimensfrom the pins and soaking and relaxing them in hot water in order to examine the malegenitalia.
