ULTRASTRUCTURAL OBSERVATION ON THE PSEUDOCULUS IN HUHENTOMQN PLICATUNGUIS

The ultrastructure of pseudoculus in Huhentomon plicatunguis was investigated with transmission electron microscope.The pseudoculus is pear-shaped slightly raising on the dorso-lateral of the head.On the surface,it is decorated with fine striae (63-75 nm in width,100 nm in depth) and furrows (10 nm in width,100 nm in depth) which are arranged regularly and tightly in the direction of the main axis It looks as a projected cap with a large cavity between the exo-and endocuticle.There is a simple keel projecting from the endocuticle in the posterior half of the cavity.Beneath the endocuticle,there are three bipolar sensory neurons which are full of mitochondria and ncurotubules.Each sensory neuron gives off a single ciliary dendrite penetrating obliquely through the endocuticle channel at the posterior end of the pseudoculus into the cavity.The ciliary dendrites possess "9+0" axonemal pattern,but lose this pattern immediately after entering the cavity,and expand into iaminary structure,The dendrires endings contact the furrows of exocuticlc through the pore canals.The sheath cells,containing rich ribosomes,surround the sensory neurons.The cytoplasmic processes of the sheath cells enter the cavity along with the dendrites.The structure of the pseudoculus in H.plicatttnguis is very similar to that in Hesperenlomon hwashanensis.The results suggest the close relation on phylogeny between the two species.
