Sun Zuchu
The present paper begins with the periodization of the Longgangsi and Jiangzhai sites and then divides the Banpo culture into six periods. On the basis of this study the author comes to the following conclusions: (1) The later the time, the smaller became the number of funeral objects, which was related with thn sharp increase of population and with the development of the inheritance system in the family. (2) The southern Shaanxi area maintained to a great extent mid Neolithic burial customs such as the popular practice of rich burial, the plentifulness of funeral objects for males in comparison with females, the prevalence of homosexual joint burial and the entombment of cutting-edged stone tools, which implys that its development fell behind the eastern Shaanxi area. (3) The settlement sites and cemeteries of the Banpo culture are larger than those of the Maodigou culture in size, which reflects the evolutionary course from the large matrilineal family community to the matrilineal family community, bilineal society and patrilineal society. The unitary cemeteries must largely have been clan burial grounds. The Banpo culture probably represents a union formed at least from four tribes with a common nature worship. (4) The woprship of fish and gourd, the tradition of using pointed-bottom vessels and the custom of collective burial were later inherited by the Diqiang ethnic group, which marks the blood and cultural succession between to two communities.
