Construction of the three-dimensional finite element model of the mandibular FPD

Objective: To provide the model basis for the biomechanics researches of the fixed partial denture (FPD)by constructing tree-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) model of the mandibular FPD. Methods: The 3-D FE model ofthe mandibular FPD is constructed by means of SCT scanning technology, digital image transfer and transcription, UG andMARC engineering design program. Results: The constructed model has a good similarity to the morphology of the three-dimensional images. The total number of the nodes is 5697 and the number of the elements is 4740. The model can berotated arbitrarily and can be zoomed in or zoomed out. It can also be viewed in different fashions. By applying differentmaterial properties, boundary conditions and load cases to the model, the different load conditions of FPD can be simulated.Conclusion: The 3-D FE model combining the CT technology with FE model can simulate the oral prosthetics and structureactually, and provide a method for the researches of the oral biomechanics.
