A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF MAXILIARY RECONSTRUCTION USING FREE FIBULA COMPOSITE PLAP

Objective To analysis the rationality and feasibility of maxillary reconstruction using free fibula composite flaps. Methods Five consecutive cases of maxillary reconstruction using free fibula flaps from November 27 1999 to July 10 2000 were reviewed. Data concerning the operation included description of maxillary defect, design of the fibula composite flaps, recipient vessel and complications. Results The average length of fibula used for maxillary reconstruction was 8.7cm(5~11cm), with the average number of osteotomy site 1.4(0~2). The average size of skin paddle was 9.6×6.2cm(8~12×4~8cm), and the average length of vascular pedicle was 9.6cm(8~11cm). All the flaps survived completely with the overall success rate of 100%, as well as the 100% surviva of all skin paddles. Apart from one case of skin necrosis of the donor leg, there was no other serious complication. Conclusion Maxillary reconstruction using free fibula composite flap is feasible and reliable.
