It is newly-developed method that selective arterial embolization with microcapsules which contained anti-tumor drugs treats malignant tumors. This method could effectively interrupt the blood supply of tumor, increase the concentration of anti-tumor drugs, prolong drug action in cancerous lesions and reduce the systemic toxicity. This study was intended to explore the relationship between anatomic characteristics of lingual artery and lingual artery chemoembolization, to understand distribution of microcapsules and position of embolization in lingual artery. In this study, three normal male body were studied with the technique of corrosion cart and the lingual artery specimens were observed with microscope and Scanning Electronic Microscope(SEM) respectively. The diameters and angles of the branches were measured under SEM. 8 cases with carcinoma of tongue were treated by lingual artery chemoembolization with microcapsules contained Carboplatin. The results revealed that the blood vessels in the two sides of tongue, except tip of tongue, were separated in the middle, but the capillary net under the mucous membrane of the back of tongue was connected with each other. The average diameter of deep lingual artery was 1810.0±646.0 μm, it's branches had eight to ten levels. The mean diameter of the fifth and seventh level were 252.2±99.4 μm and 109.5±47.9 μm respectively. The diameter of Carboplatin microcapsule which was prepared by ourselves was 100-300μm. According to the results, we were inferred that the position of embolization was approximately equal to the lingual artery of the fifth to seventh level. Microcapsules could flow easily to margin and back of tongue due to the characteristic structure of lingual artery. Therefore the lingual artery chemoembolization may be a good therapy for carcinoma of the midmargin of tongue.
