Identification of gas hydrate with seismic method

Seismic recognition technologies are widely adopted in the exploration and development of oil and gas fields. There are significant physical property contrasts between gas hydrate, including its entrapped gas zone, and host rocks. This allows identification for them with seismic techniques. The previous research findings prove that acoustic methods are highly effective in determination of hydrates distributed widely. This is because hydrates have strong acoustic reflection effect. Their acoustic velocities are as twice as those of seafloor sediments. If the sediment underlying a hydrate entraps natural gas, its acoustic velocity will become much lower, resulting in vivid characteristics of reflections. This paper firstly discusses the seismic signatures of hydrates based on a physical model. The gas hydrate possibly presented in the target is then identified from seismic data by structural configurations, seismic phase characteristics and AVO attributes.
