Direct hydrocarbon detection via seismic prospecting:A review of overseas advances

This paper reviews the special issue of The Leading Edge on seismic attributes. Dixrect hydrocarbon de- tection with seismic attributes has been developed rapidly since 1990s. The main achievements observed from the issue include calculation of poisson's ratio with integrated seismic inversion, absorption coefficient estimation with parametric spectrum, direct hydrocarbon detection on density volume, 10 examples of successful prediction of oil- bearing traps such as channel sand, high porosity zone, highly fractured reservoir, an example of successful pre- diction of overpressure zone, and two examples of failed hydrocarbon prediction. The author tries to elucidate what attitude people should take towards more effectively detect hydrocarbon, increase drilling success rate, and upgrade from attribute techniques to attribute science, by using seismic attribute analysis and artificial intelligence technology.
