The first Fresnel zone radius and lateral resolving power of seismic data.

The physical concept of the first Fresnel zone radius was dissected. It was pointed out that the first Fresnel zone radius means cophase seismic energies enhanced in the zone, and it is unable to manifest the physical process of two isolated sands integrating into a single big sand when the two sands get closer. To clarify the conceptual misunderstandings of current lateral resolving power computing methods, the author deducted a new computing formula from Rayleigh criterion and the definition of optical resolving power. It is showed that those two formulae are equivalent numerically. The first Fresnel zone radius can be treated as lateral resolving power of seismic data approximately.
