DECLINE OF AVAILABLE PHOSPHORUS IN SOIL AFFECTED BY "ACID RAIN

In this paper, the authors studied the decline of available phosphorus in two red earths and a paddy soil under simulated acid rain. The results indicated that the decline of available phosphorus in soil with time involves the fast stage and the slow stage. Available phosphorus declined in linearity in the fast stage and declined gradually in curve. It lasted 3~6 hours in the fast stage. The duration was different with the pH value of rain, i.e., the lower the pH value, the shorter it will be. Compared with pH 6.0 rain, acid rain has a significant effect on the decline of available phosphorus. The lower the pH value of acid rain, the faster the available phosphorus will decline. The effect is more notable especially in the fast stage, and it becomes insignificant with time in the slow stage. The effect of acid rain on the decline of phosphorus availability differs with soil type. As described in the test, the effect is more remarkable in red soil than in paddy soil. The main reason that acid rain accelerates the decline of phosphorus availability is that acid rain releases active aluminum and increase active adsorption points, hence enhancing the adsorption of phosphorus.
