STUDY ON THE CHARACTERISTIC OF ORGANIC INTERCALATED VERMICULITE TO ADSORB TOXIC ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION:PHENOL AND CHLOROBENZENE

Two types of organic intercalated vermiculite were synthesized by exch anging cation surfactants such as HDTMA and HDPY on vermiculite. The sorption of environmental contaminants such as phenol and chlorobenzene by organic intercal ated vermiculite was studied. The HDTMA modified vermiculite has a great capabi lity of adsorbing phenol and chlorobenzene, depending on the content of organic carbon and the type of surfactant. The adsorption of phenol by organic vermicul ite is a surface sorption mechanism and the adsorption isotherm is of the Freund ish type. While the adsorption of chlorobenzene by organic vermiculite was a par tition mechanism between water phase and organic phase in organic vermiculite an dthe adsorption isotherm is of the linear type. The adsorptive ability of organi c vermiculite had been strengthened, not weakened, by the competitive uptake o f phenol and chlorobenzene. This feature has the practical value when organic v ermiculite is used to remove more than one contaminants from wastewater.
