Hydrological Regimes of Chagan Lake in Western Jilin Province

The hydrological regime of Chagan Lake has undergone profound changes over the past 30 years.To understand hydrologic characteristics and the changes associated with anthropogenic activities,a comprehensive study was carried out to analyze the long-term trends of water level in the lake,lake storage change,water surface area,evaporation,precipitation,and surface and groundwater interaction.The study utilized remote sensing technique to determine open water surface change,and used long-term hydrologic and meteorological records from 1981 to 2011 to establish a water budget for the largest freshwater lake in northeast China.Results showed that land use and human activities have drastically reduced the lake area in the 1970s.Since the Songhuajiang River was diverted into the lake in 1986,water level of Chagan Lake reached to129.5-130.5 m and Open water surface area to 281.4-400.6 km2.The maximum water storage capacity fluctuated from 3.35×108to 6.47×108m3,not accounting the two extreme flood years of 1986 and 1998.The results from the water balance equation showed a strong interaction between surface water and groundwater in Chagan Lake.During 1981-1985 when the open water area was shrunk due to land use change and hydrologic modification,Chagan Lake functioned as a recharge zone,supplying annually 0.76×108m3to the groundwater;during 1987-1997,Chagan Lake functioned as discharge zone,receiving annually 0.65×108m3from shallow groundwater;the groundwater supply maintained at a similar level during 1999-2011.These results indicated that groundwater pollution from the intensive agriculture in the area would be a serious threat to surface water quality for Chagan Lake.
