Prevalence of gout in Shanghai

Objective To determine the prevalence of gout in Shanghai.Methods The same questionnaire was administered to each subject surveyed. Physical examinations,X ray photograph and serum uric acid detection were done in all those who gave positive answers.Results Among the 6584 adults, 20 men and 2 women were diagnosed as gout. The crude rate of gout was 0.33% (men 0.63% and women 0.06%).The standardized incidence of gout was 0.22% (men 0.44% and women 0.03%) . The ratio of standardized incidence of gout between males and females was 15∶1.Conclusion The prevalence of gout in Shanghai is 0.22%, and the males are much more prone to develop gout.
