Both of ischemia and hypoxia can induce injury to vascular endothelial cell. This study was performed to measure the malondialdehyde (MDA)level in supernate of culture media and cell homogenate, and to assess the effect of tetramethylpyrazine on primary cultured vascular endothelial cell of umbilical vein of neonate under hypoxic environment. The results showed that the MDA level in supernate of culture media and cell homogenate increased significantly (P0.01) when the cell was cultured under hypoxic environment, and added various concentrations of tetramethylpyrazine could prevent this phenomenon. These results suggested that tetramethylpyrazine had the protective effect on hypoxia cultured vascular endothelial cell since it could inhibit the formation of free radicals and the lipid peroxidation.
