MMP-9 Relative to Hemorrhagic Transformation of Cerebral Infarction and Its Research Progress

GU Ye LIU Zhen-Guo Department of Neurology,Xin Hua Hospital,School of Medicine,Shanghai Jiao Tong University,Shanghai 200092,China
Matrix metalloproteinases are a major group of enzymes that regulate cell-matrix composition. They are essential for pathological processes including artherosclerosis, tumor migration, imflammation and so on.MMP-9 plays a key role in cerebral vascular diseases. It can degrade the laminin and fibronectin which are the major components of the basal lamina, then break down the blood-brain barrier which is high permeability. It shows that MMP-9 is relevant to edema and hemorrhagic transformation of cerebral infarction. Its functional mechanism in cerebral infarction turns it into a target for therapy of acute ischemic stroke.
