Oxidative damages and dry eye

Liu Changming;Yin Zhonggui;Department of Ophthalmology,Pudong New District People's Hospital,Shanghai;
Dry eye has been the highest morbidity among ocular surface diseases. The pathogenesis of dry eye is very complex. Oxidative damages and inflammation play important roles. Various inflammatory mediators affect hormone metabolism,induce apoptosis,inhibit neurotransmitter release,and impact the structure and function of ocular surface.Oxidation produces excessive peroxidase,which in turn produce free radicals that damage the ocular surface and evoke inflammation and ultimately result in dry eye.
