Clinical research of elemene emulsion combined with FOLFOX 4 regimen for advanced gastric cancer

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and adverse reactions of elemene emulsion combined with FOLFOX 4 regimen in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer.Methods Forty-nine patients were randomly divided into treatment group(n=24) and control grouip(n=25).Both the two groups were treated by FOLFOX 4 regimen(oxaliplatin 85mg/m2 iv,d1;leucovorin 50mg iv,d1,d2;fluorouracil 400mg/m2 iv,600mg/m2 civ 22h,d1,d2;2 weeks was a cycle),and treatment group was also given elemene emulsion(500mg iv,2 weeks was a cycle).The efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated after four cycles.Results The response rate were 60.0%(CR 3 cases,PR 12 cases) in treatment group and 41.7%(CR 2 cases,PR 8 cases) in control group respectively(P0.05).The median time to progression in treatment group and control group were 7.1 months versus 5.2 months(P0.05) and median overall survival were 11.0 months versus 9.3 months(P0.05).A lower rate of leucopenia,nausea,vomiting and diarrhea occurred in treatment group compared with that of control group(P0.05),and there was significant difference in the elevation of life quality(48% vs.25%) as well(P0.05).Conclusion Elemene emulsion combined with FOLFOX 4 regimen can improve the efficacy,decrease the incidence of side effects of chemotherapy,elevate the life quality and prolong the survival in advanced gastric cancer.
