Effect of polysaccharide sulfate on insulin-resistance in treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia

AIM: To investigate the effect of polysaccharide sulfate (PSS) on insulin-resistance in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 (2DM) and hyperlipidemia. METHODS: All 62 patients were treated with PSS 600 mg per day for 12 wk and to compare the levels of blood lipids, fasting blood glucose, insulin, insulin sensitivity index (ISI) and body mass index (BMI) with the baseline. RESULTS: Comparing with baseline data, the TC, LDL-C and TG were decreased by 27.88%, 34.75% and 29.64% respectively (all P0.01); HDL-C was increased by 26.88% (P0.01), BMI was decreased (P0.05) with ISI increased remarkably (P0.01). The percentage of gluco-hemoglobin Alc (HbAlc) which reflect weather 2DM be under good control was lowered (P0.01). CONCLUSION: PSS can be used to correct the abnormal lipids metablism and improve insulin-resistance in the treatment of 2 DM patients with hyperlipidemia.
