On the Evolution and Characteristics of Ancient Chinese Court Music

As part of traditional Chinese music,court music is composed of two major ingredients:“music utile”(ya) and“music dulce”(yan),the former is functionally pragmatic and therefore conservative while the latter is functionally entertaining and therefore flexible.For four millennia,ancient Chinese court music served the royal community for political,religious,cultural and artistic purposes.
