Subclinical Hypothyroidism in a Population with Long Term Environmental Excessive Iodine Intake

[Objective] To examine the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism and its possible association with environmental iodine in a population with long term excessive iodine intake from primitiye environment.[Methods] Population in a rural area of excessive environmental iodine township(EIT),Mengzhuang Township of Pei County,were selected as the study population,and population in Xinji Township of Pizhou City,a normal environmental iodine township (NIT),were selected as the control.All residents were investigated for thyroid diseases and subclinical hypothyroidism was diagnosed based on clinical history,signs,symptoms and serum tests for thyroid simulating hormone(TSH),FT_4 and FT_3.[Results] A significantly higher prevalence(5.55 per 100000)of sub-clinical hypothyroidism was observed in EIT than that in NIT(1.18 per 100000).The age adjusted RR was 4.6(95%CI:2.7-7.9)in both sex,whereas the RR was 2.9 (95%CI:1.0~8.6)in male,and 5.2 (95%CI:2.8~9.8) in female.[Conclusion] Long term intake of excessive iodine in the primitive environment may be associated with the increased prevalence of sub-clinical hypothyroidisms,further risk assessment is essential.
