Design of ellipsoid-shaped head cars and numerical simulations on their aerodynamic drag performance

In view of the structural features of a head car with an ellipsoidal shape,a kind of digital design method based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline theory was proposed.This method first helped create the main and auxiliary control lines of the nose position according to its two-dimensional data and in the mean time changed the shape of control lines by adjusting the position of the control points with the help of the curve curvature comb tool.The ellipsoidal surface of the nose position was formed by a large number of Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline surfaces which are tangent to each other,and then the ellipsoidal nose and the sightseeing car were assembled in a virtual environment.The geometric and mathematical models and the boundary conditions were defined,and the aerodynamic drag of a blunt shaped train and an ellipsoidal shaped train was calculated at different velocities by computational fluid dynamic method.The results show that the ellipsoidal shaped one perform better in reducing aerodynamic drag.
