The Effect of Social Support on the Mortality Risk of the Chinese Elderly by Cox Model Analysis

Based on the data from Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey of Chinese oldest old between the age of 80 to105(1998-2005), the paper adopts Cox model to analyze the impact mechanism of the social support on the mortality risk of the Chinese elderly and it is an empirical test of the mechanism of social support proposed by western scholars in China too. The findings show that the social support boasts of buffering effect on the mortality risk only for the elderly with poor health conditions, there is interaction effect between social support and health variables and living cares and emotional support have a significant effect on improving the health of the oldest old.
