Influence of On-line Quenching Process and Trace Elements on Energy Absorption Box Performance of 6008 Aluminum Alloy

The effects of on-line quenching method and trace alloying element Mn on the microstructure and properties of 6008 aluminum alloy energy absorbing box were studiedin this paper. The results show that the strength of the profile increases significantly with the increase of the quenching cooling rate, and the elongation also increases. The main reason for the improvement of the mechanical properties and crushing effect of the profile by water cooling is that water-cooling can effectively avoid the supersaturated solid solution desolvation during the quenching process, ensuring the supersaturated solid solubility of Mg and Si elements. When the content of Mn is increased from 0.3% to 0.5%, the grain size is remarkably reduced, and the mechanical properties and crushing properties are remarkably improved.
