Catalytic Synthesis of Acetals or Ketals with Polymer Protected Catalyst polyvinyl chloride-Ferric chloride

Yu Shanxin Chen ChunlinDepartment of Chemistry, Hunan Normal University, Changsha, 410081
In this paper, the catalyst of polyvinyl chloride ferric chloride (PVC-FeCl3) was first used in the synthesis of acetals and ketals. Glycol or 1,2-propanediol reacted with the carbonyl group of aldehydes or Ketones in the presence of PVC-FeCl3 to yield acetals or Ketals. Thus a mixture of 0.2mol aldehydes or Ketones, 0.3mol alcohols and 0.5g catalyst using cyclohexane as solvent were heated for 50 minute at refluxing temperature, The yield was 78-91%,
