Present Situation and Research Progression on Nitrate Contamination of Groundwater

LIU Xiao-chen1,SUN Zhan-xiang2(1.Shenyang Agricultural University,Shenyang,Liaoning 110161;2.Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences,Shenyang,Liaoning 110161)
Groundwater resource is limited,as an important resource which is closely related to people's health and the quality of life.Recently, the problem on groundwater nitrate contamination that is increasingly serious gradually arouses the concern of the peoples of the world, and NO3——N becomes the most frequently contamination into groundwater. Therefore,China,Europe, the United States and other countries all have done a great deal survey and monitoring on this. The results show that the application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer is the main reason that causes the nitrate pollution of groundwater. In China, application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer in different types of farmland reflect different impact to the goundwater of crop-growing aeras. The vegetable field uses more amount of nitrogen fertilizer, which is usually several times and even more several times than the grain and rice fields.Hence, the groundwater polluted situation of shallow root vegetable crop-growing areas is the most serious, and the rate of exceeding nitrate content standard in groundwater is still higher than the other two types of farmland. Moreover,in recent years, due to excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer and improper fertilization methods, and so on,the groundwater pollution shuold not be ignored both in the grain-growing areas and the paddy cultivation areas.Even if there is no any pollution at the moment, the potential threat is still existing in the soil of arable land that the accumulation of NO3——N would eluviate into groundwater by the way of rainfall and irragation. At the present time,we have developed a serie of unambiguous evaluation criteria and standards of test menthod on the governance of nitrate contamination of groundwater.Although there are still many deficiencies, scientists are working hard to improve the problem of drinking water nitrate polluted in rural areas.
