Effect of rare earth oxides on microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum titanate ceramics

Effects of Y2O3 and the mixture of Y2O3 and Nd2O3 on sintering temperature,microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum titanate ceramics were studied. The experimental results show that the sintering temperature can be reduced, and the microstructure and mechanical properties can be improved by adding 1 % rare earth oxides in aluminum titanate ceramics. The bending strength and fracture toughness of the composites adding 1% mixture of Y2O3 and Nd2O3 are 1.96and 1.82 times respectively of that without adding rare earth oxides. The reason is that the rare earth oxides added in aluminum titanate ceramics can contribute to the strengthening by the refinement of grain size, purification of grain boundary,solid solution strengthening and in-situ strengthening and toughening.
